Den Chiefs

Den Chief
Appointed by the Scoutmaster at the request of a Den or Pack

Pre-Requisites: (pre-requisites must be met by the date of the election)
  • Minimum age of 12 and minimum rank of Second Class
  • Must be approved by the Scoutmaster

  • Encourages Cubs to advance in rank, and to continue their Scouting efforts to Boy Scouts when of the appropriate age

Den Chief opportunities are somewhat infrequent.  There's a limited number of Dens to work with in the local Packs.
The Den Chief leadership task is significant and highly regarded as an important role within your troop.
Den Chiefs typically work very hard with their Dens including meeting frequently, teaching skills, helping the Den leader, and being supportive of their Den in all ways.
Den Chiefs have the added responsibility of respectfully representing himself, his Troop, and Boy Scouting.
A successful Den Chief provides a key transition contact between a Troop and a Webelos Den as scouts seek to move into a boy scout troop.
A Boy Scout who is active and successful as a Den Chief leader is demonstrating the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
Successful Den Chiefs are highly regarded by the Cub Scouts in their Den, Den Leaders, Troop Leaders, and parents in the troop and pack.

How to be one:
  1. Must have met the Pre-Requisites of the Den Chief Position
  2. Complete Den Chief on-line training
  3. Complete additional training when offered (council or troop)
  4. Be presented to a Cub Scout or Webleos Scout Den Leader seeking a Den Chief

Den Chief Cords

There are three different Den Chief cords.  A T2860 Den Chief must earn his cords before they may be awarded.

Cub Scout Den Chief Cords & Webelos Den Chief Cords:
These cords differ in color to represent the current Den rank.

To Earn them as a T2860 Scout:
  1. Complete the on-line Den Chief Training
  2. Meet with your Den for a minimum duration of two months
  3. Have your Den Leader recommend you for Den Chief cord awarding (e-mail or a note to me is fine)
  4. Meet with your Scoutmaster for a Den Chief leadership review
Once these steps are completed, the troop will notify your Den Leader and your Den's Cubmaster that you are eligible for the awarding of the Den Chief Cords.

Den Chief Service Award Cords:

The Den Chief Service Award Cords have a specific regimen of accomplishments to be completed as shown in the attached.   Similar Den Chief Cord awarding steps apply.
  1. Complete the on-line Den Chief Training and leadership training offered by your troop
  2. Meet with your Den for a minimum duration of one year
  3. Have your Den Leader recommend you for Den Chief Service Award Cord awarding
  4. Have your Service Award form completed and present it to your Scoutmaster
  5. Meet with your Scoutmaster for a Den Chief leadership review

Once these steps are completed, the troop will notify your Den Leader and your Den's Cubmaster that you are eligible for the awarding of the Den Chief Service
Cords. You will either be awarded the cords at a Pack meeting or at the Troop Court of Honor. Your advancement chairperson and Scoutmaster will coordinate this detail.

How and when to wear your cords:

Cub and Webelos Cords (not the Service Award Cords) are worn over the left shoulder only while serving as a Den Chief.  This is considered as part of your Class A uniform.
You may also wear the Den Chief Officer patch.  If you are concurrently serving as a PL, APL, or other Troop officer position, you may choose what patch you prefer on your uniform.
You may not continue to wear the cords or patch after you complete your service to your Den.  Typically your service ends after your Den crosses over to Boy Scouts as Webelos II's.

Den Chief Service Award Cords may be worn after your service as a Den Chief has ended.  These cords remains a part of your Class A uniform as a scout.

Retention of the Den Chief Rank:

To retain your position as Den Chief you must remain active with your Den and successfully pass periodic reviews conducted by your Scoutmaster.  I'll contact your Den Leader every few months to see how you are doing.  Failure to be active with your Den, or conduct yourself in accordance with the expectations of the position, will result in being removed from the Den Chief position.

Please notify the Scoutmaster if you are interested in a Den Chief position.
