2009 Summer Camp

Greeting Scouts! ASM Eric Strickler here -- Although it is Icy and Cold outside, it is time to think SUMMER CAMP. Summer Camp week is July 12th – 19th. We will be returning to the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation, where scouts can take advantage of some amazing programming. Whether seeking merit badges, or high adventure – there is truly something for everyone offered through their various camp opportunities.  We are asking for commitments as soon as possible, with a firm decision to be made no later than February 11th. We will need a camp specific commitment and a check for $100 to hold your spot for Summer Camp 2009 by that date.

Choices this year include: Base Camp Ottari (primarily merit badge based, but don’t forget that zip line), High Knoll (Back Packing High adventure – Philmont Style), Mountain Man (18th Century FoxFire living skills – go in a boy, return a Mountain Man.), SCUBA (no you cannot spear fish for blue gill), Voyager (50miles in a canoe 4 u?), Wakeboarding (Catch some Major Air at Claytor Lake ), New River (thrill seekers only – the 5 ‘C’s  Climbing [natural rock], Caving, Canoeing, Class V Rafting,C.O.P.E. [HIGH ropes] , Claytor Lake (the country club , everything you can do on, and in the water).

With the exception of Ottari, most of the programs require a Class III physical. I would recommend you do this ASAP. Waiting until spring will put you behind all of the school athletics that are requiring physicals. Typically, the physicals are good for 2 years. If you had one done last year, it may still be good – check with me, Mr.Dixon, or Mr.Wheeler to confirm.

Most of the high adventure programs require the scout to be at least 13 years old: Some by January 1st, some by June 21st, some by your week at camp. Look closely at the camp-specific information below.  The SCUBA age requirement is 14 by camp. There is ABSOLUTLY no exception to age prerequisite. Any scout wishing to enroll in High Knoll needs to be ok’d by Mr. Wheeler.

Any questions, comments, or observations, please feel free to contact me – Eric Strickler, (804)402-7279) ,

 or Trace Dixon, (804) 744-1269.
