2005 Spring Break Backpacking

Trip Details
The backpacking trip over Spring Break will start on Wednesday, March 30th, and continue to Saturday, April 2nd. We will spend 4 days and 3 nights hiking through Shenendoah National Park along the AT and some of the park trails.

In preparation for the trip, the backpackers will have backpacking gourmet class arranged through the Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation department. This will be held on March 23rd. Then on the 28th, we will have a peer shakedown of our packs to be sure we are prepared.
Permission Slip
The permission slip is due at the cooking class on March 23rd.
The Route

Day 1
Park at bottom of Little Devils Stairs

Start up Little Devils Stairs. Keyser Run fire road is an alternate in case of rain.

Take Link Trail to Sugarloaf Trail to AT at Hogback Overlook (mile 21).

Take AT south to Elkwallow Gap and camp near mile 24. This is about 8 miles.

Day 2
Take AT south from Elkwalllow Gap to Neighbor Mountain Trail before mile 27.

Follow Neighbor Mountain Trail to Jeremys Run Trail.

Take Knob Mountain Trail north if good weather, otherwise take Jeremys Run Trail north.

Day 3
Continue on either Knob Mountain Trail or Jeremys Run Trail. If on Jeremys Run Trail, then cut over to Knob Mountain Trail west of Elkwallow Gap.

Take Herskell Hollow Trail west to Connecting Trail then east on Beecher Ridge Trail.

Day 4
Take Beecher Ridge Trail to AT and then north on the AT. Then, AT to Sugarloaf Trail(mile 21).

Take Sugarloaf Trail to Link Trail. Link Trail to Keyser Run Fire Road and then parking area.

Emergency Contacts
In case of emergency, Mrs. Fields will be our primary contact. Mr. Holder and Mr. Fields will have cell phones, but coverage will be sporadic. All of these phone numbers will be sent out in a separate email.
